The sanctuary at Bhalowguri ( 16 km) was designated in 1998, but is scarcely visited by tourists. The current fee is a meagre Rs 20 per person (4 hours’ viewing), which includes an armed escort/guide, though the dense forest growth makes the gibbons hard to spot. Viewing the wild elephants requires an overnight stay in the specially constructed hut on stilts. A “great experience”. Contact District Forest Officer in Jorhat, then Forest Range Officer at Mariani. Bus from the top of MG Road, Jorhat, go via Mariani (18 km southeast).
